The Department of Neurology at AIIMS, New Delhi, in collaboration with ALS Care & Support Foundation (ALSCAS) India, observed Global ALS/MND Awareness Day by organising a special awareness programme aimed at improving understanding of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a progressive motor neuron disease.

The event brought together over 150 patients, caregivers, neurologists, researchers and healthcare professionals, who discussed the importance of early diagnosis, multidisciplinary care, research and stronger support systems for people living with ALS/MND. Experts announced that AIIMS will soon launch two major ALS research initiatives—a Target ALS-funded natural history study beginning in August 2026 and a smartphone-based ALS registry expected in September–October 2026 to strengthen India-specific research.

The programme also showcased assistive technologies for people with speech and mobility impairments and highlighted the critical role of caregivers and community support in improving the quality of life of ALS patients.
