Dr. Ranjan Gupta, Associate Professor, Rheumatology Dept. at AIIMS, New Delhi has been conferred the prestigious Young Rheumatologist Oration of the Indian Rheumatologist Association for the year 2021. He delivered the oration in the virtual inauguration ceremony held at the ITC Royal Bengal Hotel in Kolkata on 4th December 2021.
This oration is awarded every year to a rheumatologist with age <40 years who has contributed significantly to the field of rheumatology through his research work. He has conferred the oration for his research work on Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and Lupus Nephritis. Dr. Gupta has been working on finding newer urinary biomarkers of Lupus Nephritis and has published almost 30 national and international papers. Earlier also he was awarded the prestigious Shakuntala Amirchand Prize of the ICMR for the year 2018 in recognition of his research work.
SLE is an autoimmune disease in which almost 70% of patients can develop the involvement of kidneys which is called Lupus Nephritis. His research work is related to finding newer biochemical molecules which can diagnose lupus nephritis earlier and may also help in monitoring of treatment response. In his oratory speech, he spoke about all the research work he has done so far and what he plans to do further. He also told about a national cohort of SLE patients being created at 10 large tertiary care hospitals in India where SLE patients are enrolled and followed up for at least 3 years. The centers have created patient helplines and conducted patient education programs for the participants.
