Does COVID-19 is back? Various newspapers are talking about the new immerging variant of COVID-19. What is the current situation, do we need to get afraid, or it will be mild. While the current situation in India is manageable, health authorities recommend some precautions to avoid any risk, among all of them hand hygiene is must.
Reports says As of May 20, 2025, India is experiencing a modest increase in COVID-19 cases, primarily driven by new Omicron sub variants like JN.1 and its descendants LF.7 and NB.1.8. While the situation is under control, health authorities are closely monitoring developments.
Current COVID-19 Situation in India
- New Cases: Since May 12, India has reported over 164 new COVID-19 cases, with the highest numbers from Kerala (69), Maharashtra (44), and Tamil Nadu (34). The total number of active cases stands at 257.
- Severity: Most cases are mild, with no significant increase in hospitalizations or severe outcomes reported.
- Affected Regions: Apart from the aforementioned states, Karnataka and Chennai have also reported a rise in cases, with 16 and 40 active cases respectively.
COVID-19 Surge in Southeast Asia
Several Southeast Asian countries are witnessing a significant surge in COVID-19 cases: Singapore: Weekly cases increased from 11,000 in late April to over 14,000 in early May, accompanied by a slight rise in hospitalizations.
- Thailand: Reported 33,030 cases in a recent week, up from 6,000 the previous week.
- Hong Kong: Saw 1,042 new cases in the week of May 10, with the positivity rate rising from 1.7% to 11.4%.
- China: Hospital test positivity rates doubled over five weeks preceding May 4.

While the current situation in India is manageable, health authorities recommend the following precautions:
- Stay Vigilant: Monitor for symptoms such as fever, cough, and fatigue.
- Practice Good Hygiene: Regular hand washing and use of sanitizers.
- Wear Masks: Especially in crowded or poorly ventilated areas.
- Vaccination: Ensure vaccinations are up-to-date, including booster doses. Particularly, individuals with compromised immunity or pre-existing health conditions should exercise extra caution.
